George C. Hare, former executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Securities Inc., died Saturday of complications from cancer and pneumonia at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware. He was 71.
The former Loch Raven Village resident, who had lived in Wilmington since 1985, retired in 2000.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Govans, he was a graduate of St. Charles Seminary in Catonsville. From 1951 to 1953, he served with the Marine Corps.
After earning a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore and his CPA certificate, he went to work for the former Glenn L. Martin Co. in 1957.
Mr. Hare held various positions with Standard Lime and Cement Co. and Capitol Cement Co., both owned by Martin and later merged to form Martin Marietta Cement Co. He served as chief financial officer of the company from 1979 until 1985, when it was sold.
From 1985 until he retired, he was executive vice president for Martin Marietta Securities Inc., which became Lockheed Martin Securities.
While living in Loch Raven Village, Mr. Hare was an active communicant and lector at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Baynesville. He was also associated for many years with the Loch Raven Optimists' boys baseball.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. today in the chapel at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road.
Mr. Hare is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Mary D. Lindung; three sons, Stephen E. Hare of Richmond, Va., Paul C. Hare of West Chester, Ohio, and William A. Hare of Aurora, Ill.; two brothers, Michael J. Hare of Ocean City and Walter M. Hare Jr. of Forest Hill; a sister, Mary E. Stauffer of Ocean Pines; and eight grandchildren.
