Seniors eligible for coupons good at farmers' markets

Anne Arundel County residents age 60 and older are eligible to receive $15 coupons that can be used to buy fruits and vegetables at farmers' markets throughout the state.

The coupons will be available next week at senior centers and nutrition sites throughout the county and at the Department of Aging offices in Annapolis and Glen Burnie.

The coupons are valid until Oct. 31. The limit is one coupon per household.

The Seniors Farmers Market Program is funded and managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the Maryland and the Anne Arundel County departments of Aging.

South County center offers autobiography course

An Anne Arundel Community College course, "Autobiography for Seniors," will be offered at South County Senior Center in Edgewater from 10 a.m. to noon starting July 9.

Participants will write about their lives and old family stories. Each year, in time for Christmas, the group publishes a book of stories written by members of the class.

Nutrition site manager receives award for service

Gloria Mullinex of Pasadena Senior Center was named Nutrition Site Manager of the Year by Secretary of Aging Sue Fryer Ward during a recent ceremony.

Nutrition site managers oversee meal programs, ordering and serving food, ensuring safe handling of food, encouraging senior participation, recruiting and training volunteers and organizing nutrition education and social activities.

Mullinex has been the nutrition site manager at the Pasadena center for the past two years.

Picnic: Tickets are on sale for the Welcome to Summer picnic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Mayo Beach Park. Tickets ($7) are available at Annapolis, South County and O'Malley senior centers. Computer class: O'Malley Senior Center will offer a hands-on computer class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14 at the center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton. The cost is $15. Class size will be limited to eight participants. 410- 222-6227.

Trips planned: South County Senior Center is offering two trips for seniors. The first trip, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 14, will be to Lilly Langtry's Theatre in King of Prussia, Pa., to see Legends in Concert, featuring impersonators of Jerry Lee Lewis, Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Tina Turner and Tom Jones. Meal choice must be made at time of reservation. The cost is $55. The second trip, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 26, will feature an Odyssey cruise and a visit to the National Arboretum. Nutrition talk: Sue James of Nutrition Prescriptives will present a free talk, "Learn the Latest in Diabetic Diets," from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. June 14 at South County Senior Center. Plans for healthful meals will be available. 410-222-1927.

55 Alive: An AARP "55 Alive" driving class for seniors will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 17 and 18 at Annapolis Senior Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave., in Eastport Shopping Center. The cost is $10. Registration is required. 410-222-1818.

Computer skills: Pascal Senior Center will offer a two-hour seminar for county senior center members who don't have a computer but are interested in learning more about them at 9:15 a.m. June 19 in the computer lab. The registration fee is $2. 410-222-6680.

Comedy show: Wheatfield Theatre Company will present "Afternoon of Comedy" at 11 a.m. June 19 at O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road. The free show includes four vignettes featuring Maria Lakkala and Gerald Riley. 410-222-6227.

Drive safely: O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, will sponsor a "55 Alive" safe-driving course from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 26 and 27. The two-day workshop, conducted by a representative of AARP, will help senior citizens improve their driving and accident-prevention skills. Art tour: South County Senior Center will offer a six-week class that features a van trip each week to a Baltimore or Washington art museum. 410- 798-4802.
