State's attorney, sheriff to announce joint re-election bids
Two veteran Democratic officeholders in Anne Arundel County are scheduled to announce their re-election bids today.
Frank R. Weathersbee, 58, is expected to announce that he will seek a fourth four-year term as state's attorney.
George F. Johnson IV, 48, is expected to open his campaign for a third term as sheriff.
Weathersbee and Johnson are expected to run together, as they did four years ago.
Man, 27, charged in pair of carjacking attempts
An man was being held without bail yesterday at the county detention center in Annapolis on charges that he attempted two carjackings within 10 minutes last week in Glen Burnie.
James Maggio, 27, of no fixed address was charged with two counts of attempted carjacking and related crimes after being arrested Friday by officers who said they found him hiding in a wooded area behind East Park Shopping Center in Glen Burnie.
Police also said they recovered the knife that had been used in the attempted carjackings. In the first case, a woman was attacked and cut Thursday afternoon as she got into her car in a parking lot in the 7900 block of Crain Highway. A short time later, a man attempted to carjack a woman's vehicle in another parking lot in the same block.
Maggio also has been charged with burglary and assault in connection with an incident Wednesday, according to police reports.
Single-vehicle crash in Shady Side leaves 1 dead
Police were investigating yesterday the cause of a fatal accident in Shady Side.
Joseph Edward Klotz, 41, of Hyattsville was killed when a pickup in which he was a passenger ran off Columbia Beach Road on Sunday morning and struck a utility pole, police said.
The driver, Richard Vernon Green, 40, of Columbia Beach, suffered minor injuries, police said.
Man arrested in robbery of Glen Burnie gas station
An Annapolis man was arrested and charged with robbing a Glen Burnie gas station at gunpoint yesterday.
Police say Donald Lee White of the 800 block of Marengo St. entered the Sunoco station in the 300 block of Hospital Drive about 6:30 a.m. yesterday, robbing it of $399 and a carton of cigarettes.
After a chase, officers found the suspect hiding behind a washing machine in a laundry room of an apartment building in Mountain Ridge Court, police said.
Police reported finding several bags of crack cocaine in White's pockets. They also said they recovered a handgun that the suspect had thrown down during the chase.
