Procedures speeded for BWI travelers with e-tickets

Baltimore-Washington International Airport travelers using e-tickets will find improvements at several of the terminal's ticket counters. US Airways has joined Continental and Northwest Airlines to provide separate counters for passengers with e-tickets who wish to check luggage. The service is meant to ease check-in and allow travelers to quickly check their luggage and proceed to security screening areas.

Passengers not checking luggage may go directly to the appropriate security screening areas and receive boarding passes at the gate. Once through the check-in and security processes, passengers must be in their gate area at least 30 minutes before departure time.

Panel taking applications for livability grants

The 11-member Citizens' Committee for the Enhancement of Communities Surrounding BWI Airport met May 15 to review applications in the current grant cycle, in which $250,000 has been designated for appropriate projects.

For fiscal year 2003, which begins July 1, four grant cycles have been set up, with the first application cycle deadline scheduled for Aug. 1. Applicants must be a community association or organization in good standing. The Maryland Department of Transportation will approve the committee's final recommendation. An applicant may submit an unlimited number of requests, which must be accompanied by a complete description of the proposed project.

The committee, coordinated by the Maryland Aviation Administration, evaluates livability issues that affect communities within the most recently certified Airport Noise Zone or within two miles of the outermost noise contour. Applications for grant money may be used for transportation-related projects only.

Off-peak runway closures needed for improvements

Periodic late-night and morning runway closures will be necessary to make airfield improvements. The closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. Saturdays to 10 a.m. Sundays beginning this weekend and will continue each Saturday for three months.
