William B. Schikner Jr., 90, city letter carrier

THE BALTIMORE SUN

William B. Schikner Jr., who worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Baltimore for more than 30 years, died of complications from a stroke Tuesday at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 90.

The Baltimore native spent most of his career at the Gwynn Oak Junction post office, delivering letters on foot to residents of West Baltimore.

He began working for the Postal Service after attending Calvert Hall College High School in Towson. During World War II, he left to join the Navy, serving in a naval construction battalion from 1943 to 1945.

After retiring from the post office in 1972, he remained active in the Oriole Branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers, at one point serving as vice president of the chapter.

In 1935, Mr. Schikner married Freddie Theresa Ruth, who died in 1981. In 1997, he married Elizabeth Linder Garvey, whom he met when she moved next door to him at the Stella Maris center.

"I laughed more with him than I laughed in a lifetime," Mrs. Schikner said.

Services were Friday.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Ellen Luby of Franklin, Tenn.; a son, John C. Schikner of Dayton, Ohio; four grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William B. Schikner III.
