Celestine Burke, a retired Social Security Administration worker, died of cancer Sunday at University of Maryland Medical Center. She was 61 and lived in the Milford Mill area.
She retired last year as a benefit earnings technician at Social Security, where she worked for 30 years. She had since been training to become a nurse.
Born Celestine Margaret Briscoe in Baltimore and raised on Mondawmin Avenue, she was a 1959 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, where she was a member of the swimming team. She earned a degree in business administration at Cortez Peters Business School.
As a young woman, she swam on teams at Chick Webb Recreation Center in East Baltimore.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Higher Dimension Christian Center, 2900 Liberty Heights Ave., where she was a member and belonged to the nursing ministry.
Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Roger Burke; two sons, Rodney Burke of Catonsville and Anthony Burke of Linthicum; a daughter, Pamela Hawkins of Westminster; three brothers, Robert Briscoe, Donald Briscoe and Thomas Briscoe, all of Baltimore; a sister, Gloria Settlers of Baltimore; and six grandchildren.
