Arts awards announced


Seven members of the Maryland arts community are set to receive Governor's Arts Awards, the most prestigious honor the state gives to artists, educators and businesses that have shown commitment to the arts.

Those who will be honored tonight at the Walters Art Museum are:

Individual Artist Award: Baltimore multimedia artist Joyce Scott, whose beaded sculptures and fabric art have been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Arts Educators Award: Dr. Nathan Carter, director of Choral Arts at Morgan State University, and Dr. David C. Driskell, a trained painter and Distinguished University Professor of Art at the University of Maryland College Park.

Arts Patron Award: Doris E. Patz, a Baltimore writer and musician who helped establish and has donated extensively to the University of Maryland University College Maryland Artists Collection.

Small Business Award: Globe Theater in Berlin.

Large Business Award: Lockheed Martin in Bethesda.

Lifetime Achievement Award (Posthumously): A. Mario Loiederman, a Bethesda resident who died in December. He played a key role in securing the money to build a second home for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Montgomery County.
