'May Day Fairie Festival' comes to Glen Rock, Pa.

It seems an odd idea: a festival in honor of a fantastical being. But it's more than that. The annual "May Day Fairie Festival" in Glen Rock, Pa., this weekend is really a celebration of spring's abundance and the coming summer bounty. And what better theme to represent nature's yield than the "Fairie," a spirit of the natural world?

Visitors to the festival can watch performances by magicians, musicians and dancers, see the Bread and Puppet Theater, participate in maypole dancing along with bagpipe music, and browse an array of handmade arts and crafts. There will be Fairie craft activities, including Fairie wand-making and Fairie garland-making. There will also be "Woodland Gnome and Elf Tours," "Fairie Tea Parties" and visits from several "Celebrefairies." The first 100 visitors who arrive in "Nature Spirit" costume will be given a free bag of "Fairie Dust." Food will be available at the festival.

The "May Day Fairie Festival" takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Spoutwood Farm, off Route 216 W in Glen Rock. Parking will be near the Glen Rock Exit off Interstate 83, and shuttles will transport visitors to and from the festival. $7; $5 ages under 12; free for ages under 2. Call 717-235-6610.
