Sister Urban Maria, 93, elementary school teacher
Sister Urban Maria McMahon, who taught in Baltimore parochial schools for 28 years and was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, died April 12 of cardiac arrest at Assisi House, the order's retirement home in Aston, Pa. She was 93.
Born in Feakle, County Clare, Ireland, Josephine McMahon immigrated in 1927 to Glen Riddle, Pa., now Aston, where she joined the order's congregation.
After professing her vows in 1931, she taught elementary school pupils for nearly 50 years at parochial schools on the West Coast and in Baltimore. She earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1963 from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg.
Local teaching assignments, which began in 1940, included the parochial schools of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Shrine of the Little Flower, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and, from 1969 to 1979, St. Anthony of Padua.
She retired to Assisi House in 1996.
A Mass of Christian burial was offered Tuesday.
Sister Maria is survived by a sister in Ireland.
