Yankees update

Only one American League team had a better spring record than the Yankees' 20-14: The Orioles were 20-9-1. The defending AL champions don't come into today's game in perfect health, but they're close enough. Prized free-agent acquisition Jason Giambi left Saturday's game because of cramping in his left calf, but he's in the Opening Day lineup. So are third baseman Robin Ventura, who sprained his left ankle last Monday, and left fielder Rondell White, who strained his left rib cage Feb. 25. White appeared in his first major-league game of the spring on Saturday. Shane Spencer is scheduled to start in right field after being hit on the left elbow during Friday's game. With Chuck Knoblauch now in Kansas City, second-year man Alfonso Soriano has inherited the leadoff duties. The Yankees, who are the popular choice to win the AL East and advance to their fifth straight World Series, have bumped up Wells to No. 2 starter so they can save left-hander Andy Pettitte for the home opener.
