Spalding girls capture tourney, winning in OT

The top-ranked Archbishop Spalding girls basketball team captured the first Maryland-D.C. Independent Schools State Championship by defeating St. John's at Prospect Hall, 58-52, in overtime at St. Mary's Ryken High School in Leonardtown last night.

The Cavaliers rallied from a 45-41 deficit with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter, courtesy of two free throws from senior forward Kylie Bestul and a put-back of a Bestul miss by senior forward Maggie Rapp at the buzzer.

Bestul scored six points, and senior guard LaToya Strong added five of her 12 in overtime to pace Spalding (23-9).

"Nobody thought we were coming back when we were down four with 1:09 left," said Cavaliers coach Deb Taylor. "But the girls are so tough, and there's a quiet confidence about us to get the job done."

Bestul, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished with a team-high 18 points.
