Wake crunches UM, 65-47


In its biggest margin of victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent in 13 years, the Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated Maryland, 65-47, in the regular-season finale at the Joel Coliseum Annex yesterday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Terrapins (12-16, 4-12) will get another shot at the Demon Deacons (12-15, 5-11) on Friday in the first round of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.

Senior DeeDee Warley scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Terps, who were out-rebounded 44-28.

UNC Wilmington 71, Towson 42: The host Seahawks (14-12, 8-9 Colonial Athletic Association) out-rebounded the Tigers 45-27, and held Towson (2-24, 1-16) to 32 percent shooting from the field.

UNC Wilmington hit eight of 12 three-pointers. Towson got 17 points from Faith Jones and 15 from Mia Chapman.

Niagara 73, Loyola 64: Senior twin forwards Becky and Jessie O'Donohue combined for 30 points and eight rebounds to lead the host Purple Eagles (9-18, 7-11) past the Greyhounds (11-16, 5-13) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

With its sixth win in seven games, Niagara clinched seventh place in the MAAC and will play 10th-seeded Loyola on Thursday. It will be the third straight year the two teams will meet in the MAAC tournament.

Jessie O'Donohue scored 18 of her 20 in the first half as Niagara built a 43-31 lead. Jennifer Mitchell paced Loyola with 18 points.
