With or without mate, we approach Feb. 14 gloomily. Watching as romantic love -- one of life's most profound experiences -- is turned into just another retail marker hardly lifts one's spirits. However, we're realistic (and American) enough to know that we could more easily stop, say, a lava flow than the commercialization of holidays. So we give in with reasonable grace, and, with apologies to our favorite florists and confectioners, urge people to step beyond the confines of the "dozen roses an' a boxa chocolates" mentality when showing their beloveds how cherished they are.
