State writers' group schedules contest, annual conference
The Maryland Writers' Association will hold its annual writers' conference from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 10 at Chesapeake Center for the Creative Arts, 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park.
The conference gives writers a chance to participate in sessions led by established authors, instructors and motivational speakers. Author Nancy Kress, a columnist for Writer's Digest magazine, will be the keynote speaker.
The Maryland Writers' Association and 1stBooks.com are sponsoring a full-length book contest with several categories: science fiction and fantasy; mystery and thriller; romance and mainstream fiction; nonfiction; and children and young adult.
Winners will be announced at the conference. Cover letter and the first three chapters of entries are due March 1.

Soil conservation district sponsoring poster contest
The Anne Arundel Soil Conservation District is sponsoring a poster contest for county school students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The contest's theme, "The Gift of Trees," should be expressed on a poster between 8 1/2 -inches-by-11- inches and 22-inches-by-28-inches. No commercial advertisements are permitted. A completed 2002 entry form must be attached to the back of the poster.
First-place winners will receive $50 savings bonds, and their posters will be sent to the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts' Auxiliary Contest.
