Orchestra, choir to collaborate on Mozart and Haydn

The Columbia Orchestra and Western Maryland College Choir will present a concert, "Mozart and More," at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Westminster High School.

Directed by Jason Love, the orchestra will perform Mozart's overture to The Magic Flute and Sinfonia Concertante, and "Winter" from The Seasons by Haydn. Featured on the Mozart pieces will be Brenda Anna on violin and Rebecca Henry on viola.

Western Maryland instructor Norma Hooks is principal chair of the orchestra's bassoon section.

Margaret Boudreaux, choir director, will spotlight soprano Kyle Engler, bass David Griffiths, and tenor Evan Walker on Haydn's "Winter."

The two groups also will perform together at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia.

Tickets are $12; $10 for senior citizens; and $5 for full-time students to age 24. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the WMC box office and Carroll County Arts Council.

County department slates N.Y. trip for 'Oklahoma!'

Carroll County Department of Enterprise and Recreation is sponsoring a bus trip April 3 to New York to see Oklahoma! at the Gershwin Theatre on 51st Street.

The London staging of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical features Trevor Nunn as director and Susan Stroman as choreographer.

The cost is $115, which includes an orchestra seat at the 2 p.m. matinee, transportation and gratuity. The bus will leave from Carroll Community College.

A deposit of $70 is required, with the balance due by March 1. No refunds will be given after March 1 unless the seat is filled.

Farm museum to serve specialty teas with themes

Carroll County Farm Museum's Victorian Tea Parlor has proved so popular that the museum is planning several specialty teas this year.

Teas will be held in the parlor and at other sites on the grounds, depending on the tea's theme. The cost is $5.

Seatings are at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., unless noted. Groups of eight or more can reserve a time for selected specialty teas in the Carroll Room. Groups of fewer than eight may be seated with other guests.

Upcoming specialty teas include:

Sweetheart Tea on Wednesday, Thursday and Feb. 15.

St. Patrick's Tea on March 13, 14, 15.

Rose Garden Tea at 3 p.m. May 4 and 5, with seating for 36 (in conjunction with the Civil War Living History Encampment).

The farm museum's general store will be open during the teas.

Arts council lunch session will focus on Dutch art

The next "Lunch and Learn" held by Carroll County Arts Council will feature art historian Susan Williamson at noon Feb. 20.

She will discuss the importance of 17th-century Dutch art and how it influenced styles and tastes for centuries.

Williamson is an art professor at Western Maryland College and Carroll Community College.

Participants are welcome to take lunch. A dessert and beverages will be provided. Members can attend free; cost for nonmembers is $1. Reservations are encouraged.

The arts council is at 15 E. Main St. in the lower level of the Winchester Exchange Building.

Thurmont Thespians to stage world premiere

The Thurmont Thespians will present the world premiere of Andrew Michael, a musical written and composed by Doug Benson, in Frederick County this month.

The play is a fictional account of the Hart family that was drawn from many families, including Benson's, who have autistic children.

The show is suitable for all ages.

Previews of Andrew Michael will be held Feb. 21-24 at the American Legion Hall, 8 Park Lane, Thurmont. Reservations are not required for the Feb. 21 pay-what-you-can performance. Tickets for 8 p.m. Feb. 22 and 23 and for 2 p.m. Feb. 24 are $10 and $5 for students.
