Mount Airy Methodist church to celebrate Shrove Tuesday


Prospect United Methodist Church will celebrate Shrove Tuesday with a pancake supper from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the church hall.

Regular and buckwheat pancakes, fresh country sausage from Mount Airy Locker Co., applesauce and a beverage will be available. The cost is $6 and $3 for children.

Homemade kinklings, a dumpling-like pastry, also will be sold.

The church will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Brandenburg Methodist to serve pancake supper

Brandenburg United Methodist Church in Berrett will hold its third annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the church hall.

Hotcakes, sausage, cinnamon apples, hominy, orange juice, coffee, tea and milk will be served.

The cost is $5; $2.50 for children ages 6 to 10; and younger than age 6 eat for free.

Mount Airy merchants to hold shop showcase

Mount Airy merchants will hold a moonlight shopping event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday along downtown Main Street.

The event is designed to showcase the town's shops and the Main Street revitalization. Merchants will offer tokens of appreciation to shoppers and Valentine's specials.

Participating shops include handmade gifts and collectibles, model trains, books, party supplies and decorating, flowers and gift baskets, candy, health and beauty products, furniture, toys and clothes, and restaurants.

Lions Club buys books for school, mittens for tree

Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Club has announced recent activities.

The club sponsored two families for the holidays, providing food and gifts, and donated $150 in winter hats and mittens to the South Carroll High School mitten tree.

Last month, Jackie Callis from Winfield Elementary School showed the club the books that were purchased for the media center. This is the third year that the Lions have donated books to the Winfield media center.

Also last month, the club heard from Lee Ziemski and Mike O'Hara from Residents Attacking Drugs. The club made a donation to RAD for its efforts to combat drug use in the community.

Story time, book club set at Mount Airy library

The Mount Airy library library, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

"Year-round Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today, Ride 'Em Cowboy! and at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday, Valentine Friends.

"Teen Book Buddies" for all ages at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Teen-age volunteers will read stories in an informal setting.

Mount Airy Book Club for adults at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 and 1 p.m. Feb. 21 to discuss The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.
