TKF Foundation awards Arc a grant of $7,238

The Arc of Anne Arundel County is pleased to announce that it has received a $7,238 dollar-for-dollar challenge grant from the TKF Foundation of Annapolis for its MaryLandscapes Sensory Garden. The grant funds will be made available when matched by contributions to The Arc. The funds will be used to complete the Children's Garden Center project and basic improvements to the garden. The Children's Garden Center project was started by the United Way of Central Maryland's Women's Initiative in the late fall of 2001 with the donation of a Victorian farm playhouse. The center will be used by The Arc and other local organizations to bring nature programs to children with disabilities and other children's groups, including disadvantaged children in the community.

The Arc is encouraging the public to use the garden, much of which is hidden from the view from the road. The garden is located at the corner of Spa Road and the entrance to the Weems-Whalen ball fields, where parking is available. The Spa Creek trail runs directly in front of The Arc and the garden.

Those wishing to help the garden meet the TKF Foundation's challenge grant can send donations to The Arc of Anne Arundel County, Children's Garden, 931 Spa Road, Annapolis 21401. The Arc can be contacted at 410-268- 8085 or www.arcofannearundel. org. The Arc MaryLandscapes Sensory Garden is one of only a few gardens of its type in the United States and a point of great pride for Annapolis.

County sheriff deserves note for job well done

I am glad to see that Anne Arundel County Sheriff George F. Johnson IV is finally getting some well-deserved recognition in The Sun ("Show's focus: 'most wanted,'" Jan. 18).

Sheriff Johnson took over a disorganized, moribund organization and has transformed it into a superbly managed, professional law-enforcement agency with clearly defined duties and responsibilities and an excellent working relationship with the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Anne Arundel citizens and taxpayers owe Sheriff Johnson a debt of gratitude for ensuring that their tax dollars are well-spent in the Sheriff's Department.
