Effort to bridge schools to close roadways today

Sections of Northern Parkway and Roland Avenue will be closed today to allow work crews to set into place pedestrian bridges linking Gilman School, Bryn Mawr School and Roland Park Country School, weather permitting.

Northern Parkway between North Charles Street and Roland Avenue will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. while the bridge linking Bryn Mawr School and Gilman School is set into place, school officials said.

Roland Avenue between Deepdene Road and Northern Parkway will be closed from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. for a similar bridge project linking Gilman School and Roland Park Country School.

If necessary, crews will use Monday - the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday - to ease the 100-ton, green steel bridges into place, officials said.

The three private schools are splitting the cost of the two bridges - between $2 million and $3 million - built because of safety concerns about students crossing the streets through busy traffic. The schools share a coordinated curriculum, school officials said, so students frequently walk among the campuses during class changes.

The Northern Parkway bridge will be higher off the ground, with a clearance of 18 feet, compared with a 16-foot clearance on the Roland Avenue bridge.

This weekend is the second try to get the bridges in place. City officials called off a planned lift two weeks ago because they said the proper permits were not in place.
