I was surprised when Razorbacks Raw Bar and Grill in Canton closed last spring. It served the kinds of foods Baltimoreans love - ribs and seafood - and it did them well.
It turns out that Razorbacks didn't close for good; it was merely relocating. The restaurant has reopened where Fisherman's Wharf used to be in the Dulaney Valley Shopping Center in Towson. The new space is about twice as large as the Canton Razorback's was.
Chef Andrea Prezioso is still running the kitchen and turning out the ribs, pancetta-wrapped grilled shrimp, seared tuna and cedar-planked salmon the Canton restaurant was known for. Dinner entrees are priced from $9.95 to $24.95.
Razorbacks is open every day for lunch and dinner.
Calling all girls
I'm not sure you can make much money selling food to girls 7 to 16 years old, but Girls' Life Living is going to give it a try. This is the new cafe located at 4511 Harford Road, opened by the publishers of Girls' Life magazine. It sounds like fun: The space includes an arcade area as well as a place to eat sandwiches, homemade soups, gourmet coffee drinks, ice cream, pastries, popcorn, hot pretzels, peanuts and candy.
Its audience is girls, but boys are welcome. (As are their parents, since most young patrons don't drive.) Kids also participate in weekly fashion and talent shows.
If the concept takes off, there are plans to open Girls' Life Livings in Timonium and White Marsh, and eventually to franchise. When that happens, I'd suggest a name change to something that isn't quite such a mouthful.
The Harford Road location is open daily, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Desert Cafe renovates
The new owners of the Desert Cafe (1605-07 Sulgrave Ave.) have completely renovated the Mount Washington restaurant's first and second floors and added a new espresso bar. Whitney Wollman and her brother Blake, who took over last September, are keeping the casual menu of salads, vegetarian soups, gyros and desserts but have added daily specials like salmon with feta, tomatoes and olives, and turkey chili.
Winter hours for the cafe are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, till midnight Friday and Saturday.
