UMBC holds off St. Francis, 77-75


Peter Mulligan scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the UMBC men's basketball team to a 77-75 victory over host St. Francis (Pa.) in the Northeast Conference opener last night in Loretto, Pa.

St. Francis (1-3) was down 15 points with 11:20 to play, but Joey Goodson rallied his team with three three-pointers in 66 seconds to tie the game at 72 with 2:48 to go.

UMBC (3-0) scored the next four points on two free throws and a basket by Will McClurkin to take a 76-72 lead.

Citadel 83, Navy 47: Guard Travis Cantrell scored 20 points and three other Bulldogs (3-1) scored in double figures as the Citadel routed the Midshipmen (1-4) in a nonconference game at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C.

The defeat tied Navy's worst outing since an 87-51 loss to North Carolina in the 1998 NCAA tournament.

Robert Morris 66, Mount St. Mary's 57: Maurice Carter had 15 points, including two pairs of free throws in the final minute, to secure the Eagles' win over the Mountaineers (0-2) in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.

Forward Tyler Bacon also had 15 points. The Mountaineers were led by Jerry Lloyd's 19 points.


Johns Hopkins 85, Delaware Valley 59: Sophomore guard Maureen Myers scored a career-high 18 points to lead the 20th-ranked Blue Jays (6-0) to an easy win over the visiting Aggies (1-2) in a nonconference game.

Myers scored eight points as Hopkins began the game on a 21-3 run. The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 20 points at halftime, then opened the second half on an 8-0 run capped by a layup from Myers to lead 53-25 just 2:40 into the half.

Goucher 68, Mary Washington 53: The visiting Gophers (3-2) took their Capital Athletic Conference opener, downing the Saints (1-4) on the strength of a dominating second half.

With the score tied at 29 at intermission, Goucher - paced by Kate Guggino's 25 points - outscored Mary Washington 39-24 in the second half.
