Probably the best thing about holiday time is the food. It also can be the worst thing.
A traditional dinner of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and other dishes can exceed 2,500 calories, according to Weight Watchers International. And it's not surprising that those calories translate into unwelcome pounds.
Weight Watchers offers these suggestions to help keep weight in check:
Be realistic. During the holidays it should be sufficient to maintain your present weight, not lose weight.
Don't skip meals. That can lead to food cravings.
Drink plenty of water to help curb your appetite.
Keep a food diary to record what you're eating.
Eat smaller portions.
Limit the consumption of alcohol, which is a major contributor of holiday calories.
Don't linger over the food table. Move away once you've made your food selections and your plate is full.
Stay active. Walk, rake leaves, play touch football.
Overcome stress by setting aside time to relax and delegating jobs to others.
