Hopkins falls, Western Md. wins in men's semifinals

Gettysburg midfielder Michael Sarbaugh scored the winning goal with 27:44 left in the match yesterday to lift the Bullets to a 2-1 win over host Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference men's soccer tournament semifinal.

Gettysburg advances to the final today at 6 p.m. against No. 2 Western Maryland, which defeated No. 3 Muhlenberg, 1-0, in double overtime on Tom Long's goal.

Frostburg State 9, Penn State Altoona 0: Sophomore Steve Brett scored three goals to lead the top-seeded and host Bobcats (11-6-1) past the fourth-seeded Lions in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament. The Bobcats will meet No. 3 Penn State Behrend in the final today.

Towson 2, Northeastern 0: The Tigers (12-3-1 overall, 8-1-1 America East) handed the Huskies their first home loss this season, behind goals from Todd Lauber and Alfonso DeMares.

Field hockey

Maryland 4, Virginia 1: Freshman Colleen Barbieri scored in the first half as the top-ranked Terrapins (16-3) won in an ACC semifinal in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Terps will meet Wake Forest tomorrow at 1 p.m in the final.
