Apple Butter Festival in Berkeley Springs
Dark and spicy apple butter will be slowly simmering in giant copper kettles in the center of town square in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., during this weekend's Apple Butter Festival. Constant stirring is a must and passers-by are encouraged to take a turn with long-handled, spoon-bill stirrers. A parade featuring more than 100 entries, ranging from bands and floats to drill teams and marching children, kicks off the 28th annual event Saturday morning. Colorful booths will line the streets as more than 200 vendors offer everything from traditional crafts to home-canned goods. There will also be musical entertainment, jugglers, fire eaters, turtle races, hog calling and apple-bake competitions - all framed by colorful mountain scenery.
Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Berkeley Springs is located in West Virginia's eastern panhandle, off Interstate 70. Admission is free. Call 800-447-8797.
