All through October, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, various cosmetics companies and designers are donating part of their profits from designated products (many identified by the cause's pink-ribbon symbol) to fund breast cancer research.
Here's a sampling of what's out there, most of which is available at major department stores (unless otherwise noted) including Macy's, Hecht's, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor:
"Little Black Dress"
Avon is sponsoring a promotion through which celebrities including Christina Aguilera, Gillian Anderson and Debra Messing have donated some of their own little black dresses for an online charity auction taking place on eBay.com Oct 1 to Oct. 10.
Avon also developed Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer lipsticks ($4 apiece) -- six shades in pinks, berries and browns. The lipsticks are available online at www.avoncrusade.com or by calling 800-FOR-AVON; $1 from each sale goes to funding research.
will hold its annual half-price designer shoe sale, FFANY Shoes on Sale (FFANY stands for Fashion Footwear Association of New York), donating the net proceeds on the sale of the more than 100,000 available shoes. Designers include Kenneth Cole, Bruno Magli, Donna Karan, Nine West and Anne Klein. The sale takes place Oct. 3 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. online at QVC.com and on QVC shopping channels.
Bobbi Brown will sell breath mints in pink containers for $4, donating all of the net profits.
Clinique offers a berry-colored rectangular bag with a raspberry lipstick and a folding mirror inside for $7.50 ($3 will be donated).
Donna Karan Cosmetics will donate $2 from each sale of its Cashmere Mist fragrance ($50 for 1.7 ounces), which comes wrapped in a pink ribbon.
Estee Lauder offers a Pink Ribbon compact ($40), a Pink Ribbon Body Crystal packaged with "rosebud" lipstick in its own carrying case ($20), a Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss ($15) and a Pink Ribbon Pin -- designed to look like a mini version of the compact ($15). All net proceeds will be donated.
Origins will donate $1 from every sale of its new A Perfect World moisturizer ($30).
Prescriptives donates $1 from every sale of its Orchid Paints Liquid Lipcolor ($20).
Tommy Hilfiger will donate $1 from the sale of any of his pink-colored products and from the sale of every Tommy Girl fragrance ($33 for 1.7 ounces and $47 for 3.4 ounces).
Stila's All of the proceeds from Pocket Palette ($36), a square compact with four shades of slightly glossy lip stains, will be donated and the design altered to include a pink ribbon.
Aveda will raise funds through the sale of its Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner ($7.50 apiece).
will donate a portion of its net proceeds on the sales of the 2-ounce jar of Creme de la Mer ($155).
Online retailer will donate a portion of all of its proceeds throughout the month.
Designer Peter Nygard has created a silk pink-and-black scarf bordered with symbolic pink ribbons, which sells for $60 at Octavia's in Pikesville (1848 Reisterstown Road, 410-653-9796). A portion of the proceeds will be donated.
