Mt. Carmel waits out rain, wins first 'B' title

Mount Carmel was able to outlast rain and Chapelgate Christian Academy yesterday, winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference title, 11-5, at Gilman.

After three straight one-run victories to hold off elimination after dropping their playoff opener to Chapelgate, the Cougars (17-7) broke open the final game of the double-elimination tourney with a four-run fourth inning and three in the seventh to secure victory.

"For a school our size to compete in the B Conference ... with only 97 boys, it showed how hard they've worked," said Mount Carmel coach Mike Naunton, who won his first league title after three previous championship misses. "I wanted to come back out [after the rain delay]. I felt pretty confident about our chances."

James Young went 3-for-5 for Mount Carmel, and Evan Williams had two hits, one a two-run triple in the Cougars' four-run inning.

There was a possibility that if the game was called both teams would share the title, because eight seniors on the Chapelgate roster are going on a senior trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., next week, leaving the Howard County squad with only four players

Up 3-2 before the 90-minute delay, Mount Carmel gained one more run on a throwing error. Williams, who got the extra-inning winner Thursday, lined to right field, scoring Chris Daniloski and Eddie Giese.
