MARLENE STIVERS IS returning to Linthicum to sell chances on a quilt she is making to benefit Hospice of the Chesapeake. Last month, she had planned to sit outside Charlene's Hallmark shop to stitch while passers-by admired the quilt and hospice volunteers sold chances.
But on two of those days, chilly temperatures forced her to curtail the work - her fingers so numb she could not continue. Still, she was quite pleased with the $450 worth of chances sold.
Now, with the weather a little more dependable, she is planning to be there from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday - hoping that more people will stop by to buy chances, or just visit and check in on the quilt's progress. Since her last visit, she has added flags, waves, stars and border design.
On one of the days last month, Alexander Eremchuk helped sell chances. He has been a hospice volunteer for 14 years. Eremchuk said he helped sell chances for a quilt Stivers made last year. "And I was the best salesman, too, by the way," he said.
Kay Tennant, a Linthicum resident and quilter herself, was one of his customers. She was thrilled with the camaraderie, standing on the sidewalk, drinking coffee and talking to Tennant and Stivers. "This reminds me of the little town I was brought up in Michigan," she said.
Stivers and other hospice volunteers have been selling chances at other locations and have taken in more than $1,700. The raffle is planned for Sept. 15, so there is ample time to reach the $10,000 mark that Stivers has set as her goal.
Stivers said there are 500 quilters in guilds around Anne Arundel County, and she has visited many of them to show her quilt and interest them in participating next year. She said many had ideas of how more women could collaborate on making quilts and quilted pillows. "They had some great ideas for different nautical designs and are looking forward to quilting them," Stivers said.
Don't miss the opportunity to see the work in progress. "I think it is getting prettier and prettier," Stivers said.
Women's club luncheon
Installation of five members of the board of directors for 2001-2003 and presentation of Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs and Southern District awards took place at the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights' annual luncheon recently at Michael's Eighth Avenue.
The new board members are Jo Barker, Shirley Beck, Carol Glendenning, Fran Purper and Celeste Riddle. The installation was conducted by Betty Brown, a past president of the club.
Margaret Booker, president, and Cecelia Dietz, chairwoman of the club's arts and crafts committee, made the announcements of the awards from the 102nd annual convention of the Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs in Annapolis in April.
The Linthicum club competed against 15 others with membership of 81 people or more, placing first for its activities in three statewide programs and three special projects.
They included firsts in the categories Literature and Performing Arts, Home Life and Conservation.
In Literature and Performing Arts, the club was recognized for sponsoring a dinner that raised money for Chesapeake Center for the Creative Arts, awarding a music scholarship, celebrating 20 years of its free Concerts in the Park series and for being the only club in its category to sponsor a youth writing contest.
The Home Life award was received primarily for the club's program on stress, its continued leadership in the Linthicum Healthfest and for increasing awareness of diseases of women and children. The club's Community Health and Volunteer Services Committee, under Chairwoman Lynne Marie McGowan and Purper, raised $1,091 for community health projects.
Under Conservation, beautification efforts including community cleanups and tree-plantings won notice. The club's Beautification and Garden Committee is under the leadership of June Burton.
The luncheon was chaired by Irene Wilson, with Jane Bond as co-chairwoman. The theme was "Celebrating Our Best."
AARP May fair
Patapsco Valley Chapter 3850 of AARP invites the public to its annual May fair, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church hall, 116 Marydell Road.
Visitors may browse and purchase items from the bake, bread, lemon stick, candy, book, plant, jewelry, treasures, and fancy tables. There will also be Christmas and country craft displays, country store items, and laminating of cards available. Orioles tickets, a $50 gift certificate to Snyder's Restaurant and an afghan will be raffled.
A lunch including beverage and dessert will be served for $4.
All proceeds will be returned to the community in the form of charitable donations.
