Orioles ups and downs

UP -- The long goodbye

Cal Ripken is 40 and the Orioles have no logical heir. It's a delicate thing for the club to protect itself without denting a legacy. Did anyone expect it to be easy?

UP -- Lineup intrigue

Who needs the latest Michael Crichton tome when Mike Hargrove puts out an unpredictable card every day?

DOWN -- Ryan Kohlmeier

After hinting at it for weeks, Hargrove confirmed the obvious Wednesday. Kohly the Closer is now one among many.

UP -- The trading block

The Orioles are likely to trade several veterans before July 31 (Delino DeShields, Chuck McElroy, Jeff Conine) but don't be shocked if they deal young pitching for major-league talent as well.

UP -- B.J. Ryan

Appears to have solved his funky mechanics while resurrecting the hard-to-find, overpowering fastball. Has gone from long relief to closing and earned his first ML save Wednesday.

DOWN -- Willis Roberts

What's up Willis? April's find has become May's problem child. Hargrove tried to address his composure problems and watched a less aggressive pitcher as a result. A 10.75 ERA in last three starts.
