Notre Dame (12-1) vs. Bucknell (10-3)

Seeds: Notre Dame, No. 5; Bucknell, unseeded.

Outlook: The fifth seed is the highest Notre Dame has ever received in this tournament. The Irish lost only to Hofstra, 11-10, in overtime this season. Notre Dame has won three straight Great Western Lacrosse League championships. The Irish are led by three former Boys' Latin standouts, seniors Tom Glatzel and the Ulrich twins (Dave and Todd). Glatzel has 35 goals and 22 assists, Dave Ulrich has 16 goals and 27 assists and Todd Ulrich has 17 goals. Notre Dame is 2-9 in NCAA tourney play. Bucknell is one of four automatic qualifiers (the others are Towson, Princeton and Georgetown), thanks to winning the Patriot League title. The Bison lost, 11-3, to Penn, which was beaten by Notre Dame, 10-8. Sophomore Bucknell goalkeeper Justin Sussman (6.99 goals-against average, fourth in the country) is from Towson. The Notre Dame-Bucknell winner will meet No. 4 Johns Hopkins May 20.

Virginia (7-6) vs. Hofstra (9-6)

Time: 3 p.m.

Seeds: Virginia, No. 8; Hofstra, unseeded.

Outlook: Virginia closed the regular season with a 15-6 win over Ohio State and an 11-8 victory over Butler to qualify for a ninth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers have been led by the goaltending of freshman Tillman Johnson and the scoring of former St. Paul's star Conor Gill. Johnson has a 7.84 GAA and was the first freshman goalie to win the ACC men's lacrosse rookie-of-the-year award. Gill has 14 goals and 32 assists. Hofstra is coming off a 13-11 loss to Towson in the America East championship game, but Tom Kessler continued his scoring prowess in the Towson setback with four goals and two assists. The Hofstra-Virginia winner will advance to next Saturday's quarterfinals, meeting No. 1 Syracuse.
