Salisbury hits quarterfinals after ousting Stevens Tech

SALISBURY - The Salisbury State men's lacrosse team scored a season-high eight first-quarter goals en route to a 16-3 victory over Stevens Tech yesterday in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Sea Gulls (16-1) move on to the quarterfinals for the 19th time Saturday, as they will play host to Denison. The Big Red (11-3) defeated Hampden-Sydney, 10-5, in another first-round matchup.

It took Salisbury less than three minutes to get on the board as Chris Lauer (Hereford) made a dodge on the right side of the goal to beat Ducks goalie Chris D'Urso (five saves) on his non-stick side.

Freshman Cory O'Neil led the Gulls with five points, including the two goals he scored in the record-setting first quarter. O'Neil scored the third goal of the game off an assist from Rob Bookhamer (Chesapeake).

After taking a 4-0 lead, the Salisbury offense struck again in a hurry as it scored three times in 19 seconds, with the latter coming from O'Neil on a feed from faceoff specialist Andy Murray (Centennial). Murray won 11 of his 12 draws.

Salisbury continued to pepper the Stevens Tech goal in the second quarter as Murray took a quick shot that hit the left goal post, but was picked up and thrown back in by Bookhamer for his first goal of the day. The senior midfielder struck again 36 seconds later, this time on a bounce shot off an assist from junior Josh Bergey.

"We weren't sharp. I don't think we were ready to play today," Salisbury State coach Jim Berkman said. "I think a lot of our guys were already looking forward to Saturday, but we did what we needed to do to win."
