A group of police officers who by chance converged on a downtown street yesterday afternoon chased and arrested a man suspected of robbing a Citibank branch.
Detectives assigned to a vice unit, a motorcycle officer on traffic patrol and an officer guarding a state office building assisted in the arrest, a half-block north of the bank branch at 6 St. Paul St.
Police said the robbery occurred about 2:10 p.m. when a man handed a teller a note demanding money and implying he was armed. The man obtained an undisclosed amount of money, then ran north on St. Paul Street.
The bank manager alerted Department of General Services Officer Leonard Mungo, who was at the state offices in the nearby William Donald Schaefer Tower. Mungo ran after the robber.
Vice officer Sgt. Craig Gentile said he and other detectives were driving by and joined in the chase, as did Sgt. Thomas Joyce, who was riding by on a motorcycle.
The suspect was arrested at St. Paul Street and Wilkes Lane. His name was not immediately released.
