Police fatally shoot man, 38, after 3-hour standoff at home

A 38-year-old man was fatally shot last night by a Baltimore County police sniper as he advanced toward officers after a standoff in Baltimore Highlands, police said.

Terry Bunner, 38, of the 3000 block of Virginia Ave., was pronounced dead at St. Agnes HealthCare at 8:25 p.m., said hospital spokesman John Welby.

Cpl. Vickie Warehime, a police spokeswoman, said the incident began about 4:30 p.m. when an officer tried to serve a court order at the man's home. He refused the order, shut the door on the officer, and emerged seconds later with a knife and screwdriver, she said.

He went back inside, and negotiators tried for three hours to talk him back out. At 7:45 p.m., the man, who was still armed, left the house and walked toward a group of police, who could not see him approach, Warehime said.

A sniper in a home across the street, fearing for the safety of the other officers, fired one round, Warehime said.
