Baltimore orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jack Gordon is wearing yet another hat. He was already wearing two -- his medical practice extends from Essex to Bel Air to Towson, and he owns the Bayou Blues Cafe.
Now, you can add a football helmet to Jack's collection of headgear. He's a board member of the brand-new Ravens Roost 52, whose meetings he's also holding at his eatery at The Avenue in White Marsh. In fact, No. 52 just had its first fund-raiser there recently. Some 250 folks showed up and raised about $2,000, which will go to charities helping Baltimore's needy.
"It's a way for Baltimore Ravens fans to combine their love of football with their desire to help others," Gordon says. "For our first event, it was quite good. It was a learning exercise. I think we'll do even better next time, because we now know what we're doing."
So far, Ravens Roost 52 has about 30 members, but it's looking for more. Interested parties need only apply by showing up at the next meeting at 7 p.m. May 7 at the Bayou, 8133 Honeygo Blvd.
Speaking of firsts, Planned Parenthood of Maryland held its premiere "Vine & Stein" shindig April 26 at the American Visionary Arts Museum.
Some 170 supporters braved one of our weird spring cold snaps to sample various vinos and microbrews and engage in a live auction inside AVAM's Sculpture Barn. The big prize of the evening -- a week's stay in two stone and glass beach bungalows in the British West Indies -- was so popular that the owners offered it for a second go-round, raising almost $10,000 for the organization. Final tally, according to a "thrilled" acting CEO Cleo Braver, was $30,000 and counting.
