Job resource center offering workshops
Carroll County Business and Employment Resource Center is offering workshops and programs to help individuals who might be seeking a job or a new career.
Career Ability Placement Survey, Career Orientation Placement and Evaluation Survey, and Career Occupational Preference System. Workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 14. The workshops help people make career choices by discovering their true abilities and interests.
Employment Goal Identification Workshop. Identify strengths, skills, abilities, values and interests and learn to set goals. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 14 to 17.
Starting Your Own Business. Mike Fish offers tips on exploring business ventures and aspects of starting a business from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 21.

Orion Communications marking 10th anniversary
Orion Communications Inc. of Gaithersburg is celebrating 10 years in business.
President and owner Philip G. Donnelly of Mount Airy started the business with $400 in the basement of his home. Today, the company has 26 associates and annual sales of $2.5 million.
The company started out installing telephone switches. It now installs premise cabling and laser communication devices as well. The point-to-point lasers provide high-speed connections between remote buildings without the use of cable.
Clients include the American Diabetes Association, American Medical Association, Land Rover North America, Saks 5th Avenue and USDA Graduate School.
New business provides 'outsource solutions'
Union Bridge businesswoman Bonnie Schultz has launched SOS - Schultz Outsource Solutions - to assist the growing number of businesses seeking reliable and experienced assistance.
SOS offers help with project management, meeting and event coordination, publication design and development, training coordination and database support.
"SOS extends professional, highly skilled services to area businesses as an outside source to tap into without worrying about employee training, benefits and extraneous expenses," Schultz said.
Schultz is managing the Frederick Regional Spring Job Fair for the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, where she worked previously. She also worked at Frederick Community College.

Laser Applications reports record sales
Laser Applications Inc., which has an office in Westminster, has announced record sales of more than $3 million during the first quarter of this year.
The increase was 21 percent higher than in the same period last year. The company, a laser and waterjet service provider based in Phoenix, Ariz., distributed incentive checks to employees totaling 3.7 percent of wages or salaries earned in the first quarter.
The Westminster office also announced two appointments.
John Rugh has been named director of turbine products. He has a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's of business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has 16 years of experience in turbo-machinery.
Roy Carper has been named purchasing manager for all three LAI divisions. He has more than 16 years of experience in purchasing, finance, production, inventory control and information technologies. He has a bachelor's degree from Shenandoah University.
