A 20-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting of an Essex man Saturday, according to Baltimore County police and court documents.
The fatal shooting occurred after a brawl among 10 to 15 women in the 1600 block of Dartford Road that later included several men.
After the fight, which left one woman severely beaten, two men left to retrieve knives. When they returned, another man shot one of them with a sawed-off shotgun, according to court documents.
James Floyd Colbert, a resident of the 2600 block of Kirk Ave. in East Baltimore, was arrested Tuesday night at his home, police said. He is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail. Colbert is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Jack Brown Johnston, from the first block of Mars Road, about 1:45 a.m. Saturday.
Police said Johnston was shot in the back on Dartford Road in Essex but staggered to Mars Road before collapsing. He later died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
According to court documents, the women began fighting about an unknown matter. Johnston's girlfriend was "severely beaten" during the altercation. She was treated at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Several men, including Johnston and Colbert, then began fighting, according to court documents.
Police say Johnston and a friend then walked home, obtained knives, and returned to the scene. Colbert is accused of firing as Johnston tried to flee, according to court documents.
Police arrested Colbert after several witnesses identified him.
