Open house, demonstration on track Saturday in Sykesville


Purkey's Toy Trains in Sykesville will hold an open house for Mike's Train House (MTH) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

MTH's Richard Foster, vice president of sales, and Ryan Viens, mid-Atlantic sales representative, will demonstrate the new DCS remote control system.

Other activities that day include the Little Sykes Railway on Sandosky Road open for free rides for children. The Old Main Line Visitor's Center, a reconstructed switching tower, will be open.

Baldwin's Station restaurant will be open. Reservations are recommended at 410-795-1041.

A community yard sale will be held that day around town and at Sykesville Middle School on Springfield Avenue.

Republican club to meet at St. Stephen's church

South Carroll Republican Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. May 8 at St. Stephen's Reformed Episcopal Church, 2275 Liberty Road, Eldersburg.

Del. Carmen Amedori will present a report on actions of the Carroll delegation and major actions by the Maryland General Assembly during the 2001 session.

Craft vendors wanted for Christmas in July

Carrolltown Center is seeking craft vendors for its first Christmas in July Craft Show on July 14.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the mall on Liberty Road in Eldersburg. Entry fee is $100 for each craftsperson for a space about 10 feet by 10 feet.

Deadline for registration is June 15, but the first 25 vendors to sign up will get their space for $50.

Library offering programs for all ages this month

Eldersburg branch library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering a variety of programs.

"By the Numbers: 9 is Fine" for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"Snugglebugs" lap games, rhymes and playgroup for babies to 24 months will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

"Little Red Riding Hood" by Freedom Drama Troupe will be presented for all ages (children age 3 and younger with an adult) at 11 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are required and available 30 minutes before the performance.

"In the Spotlight: Dr. Seuss" for all ages (age 3 and younger with an adult) will be held at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, and 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. May 8. Registration is required.

A Volunteer Fair for teens will be held at 7 p.m. May 8. Youths can learn what opportunities are available for service learning hours.

Writer's Circle, a creative writing club for ages 11 to 14, will meet at 5 p.m. May 8.

"Basic Internet Training: What Is the Internet and What Can it Do for Me?" for adults will be held at 2 p.m. May 10 and May 22. Registration is required.

Genealogy on the Internet for adults will be offered at 2 p.m. May 12. The program is designed for the beginner in genealogy research. Registration is required.

Carrolltown Center plans walking, fitness programs

Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg has announced May events.

Mall Walking Program Kickoff: People who sign up for the program can have their blood pressure taken and get a body fat analysis, receive information on colorectal cancer, and receive a water bottle and a T-shirt. Two events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in center court.

Free Fitness Classes: Sponsored by Health & Fitness at Carrolltown on Thursday. A tone and stretch workout will be held at 6 p.m., fun step at 7 p.m. and fun step challenge at 8 p.m. Information: 410-549-5583.

Eldersburg graduate on Navy deployment

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jon E. Nestor recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean and Persian Gulf aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Benfold, based in San Diego.

The ship is part of the USS Constellation Carrier Battle Group and USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group. The ships will defend U.S. policy and support international interests in the Middle East.

Nestor is the son of Mary and Charles Nestor of Eldersburg. He is a 1998 graduate of Liberty High School.
