Talk on German industry and Holocaust scheduled
Holocaust historian Peter Hayes will present "German Industry and the Holocaust" at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in McDaniel Lounge at Western Maryland College.
The free public lecture is part of a spring semester course on Germany's Third Reich.
Hayes, professor of history at Northwestern University, specializes in Germany in the 20th century and has written and edited four books, including a prize-winning study of the IG Farben Corp. during the Nazi era.
The 1997-1998 Shapiro Senior Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, he is working on "Profits and Persecution: German Big Business and the Holocaust," and "Degussa in the Third Reich."
The course, featuring several professors from various disciplines, opened with a look at the Nazi seizure of power. Other topics include mass psychology, women in the Third Reich, the Resistance, bioethics and the medical experiments, Jewish scientists in the Third Reich, and Nazi myths and ideology.

Kindergarten registrations can be made this week
Parents or guardians of children eligible to enter kindergarten in August are urged to register them at the elementary school serving their area this week.
Enrollment is mandatory for children who will be 5 years old by Dec. 31, but the law allows parents or guardians to request a level of maturity waiver or to enroll their child in an alternative program.
At registration, parents must present: a copy of the child's birth certificate; the child's Social Security number if parents voluntarily support its being used as the child's school student number; verification of residence; specific addresses from and to which the children will be transported when coming to school and leaving.
Parents should notify the school if they plan to apply for any waiver.

Orientation to discuss diploma options
Persons age 16 and older who want to learn about high school diploma options and other programs, and have their math and reading skills evaluated, can attend a free "First Steps" orientation.

From 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow March 29 at Student Support Services and Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 1135 Business Parkway South, Suite 30, Westminster.

Literacy Council to hold tutor training workshop
The Literacy Council of Carroll County will hold a tutor training workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 at the council office, 95 Carroll St. in Westminster.
Lunch will be provided for the initial session. Other classes will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. March 26 and 29.
Volunteers are needed to teach others how to read.

Workshop set for children with special-needs siblings
"Sibshops," a workshop for children ages 8 to 13 who have a sibling with special developmental health needs, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31 at Westminster Senior Center.
The workshop is sponsored by Change Inc., the Family Support Network of the Carroll County Infants and Toddlers Program, and Partners for Success Center of Carroll County Public Schools.
Registration is $5 and includes all materials and refreshments. Deadline for registration is March 21.

Young authors sought for writing contest
Carroll County children in grades 1 through 12 are invited to enter the annual student writing contest for the Random House Book Fair to Benefit the Carroll Community College Foundation.
The book fair will be Nov. 10 at the college. Students can submit a previously unpublished short story or poem in the contest.
Entries will be accepted from Carroll County students only and must have only one author, and only one entry per author per category is allowed.
Submissions must be typed, double-spaced with a font size of 12 points or larger. Short stories may range from two paragraphs to three pages. No illustrations are permitted.
Entries must be signed by the author and accompanied by a required cover sheet, available from each school's English department.
Entries must be submitted by April 30 to Carroll Community College, Room A117, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster 21157, Attn: Valarie Mares.
Each grade will have a first-, second- and third-place winner in each category. Winning selections will be published in the Random House Book Fair publication that will be available at the fair.
Winners will be notified in October and receive a copy of the publication.
