Broadneck earned its first trip to the regional finals since joining the 4A East, thanks to 24 points from Nikki Curtis and 12 points and 12 assists from Diana Davidson, knocking off Meade, 62-50, yesterday.
"I think we're playing well right now," said Bruins coach Bruce Springer. "We shot the ball really well, and our defense really carried us again, as it has all season."
The Bruins defense did a solid job limiting Nicole Dailey, one of the area's top scorers, to five field goals. Dailey did finish with 18 points, but Broadneck built a 33-20 halftime lead behind Curtis, who went 11 of 20 from the field and pulled down 13 rebounds.
"We're not very big, and we don't really press a lot, but we play good position defense and we did a good job of containing [Dailey]," Springer said.
Broadneck (17-7) will travel to heavily favored No. 2 Arundel tomorrow for the regional final.
Class 4A East
No. 2 Arundel 79, No. 20 Westminster 49: Najmah Fauntleroy scored a career-high 30 to lead the Wildcats past the Owls in the semifinals. Fauntleroy aslo grabbed six boards, blocked three shots and had two steals. Jill Marano chipped in 17 and Catherine Gonzalez added 15 to pace Arundel (24-1).
Class 3A North
No. 9 Milford Mill 61, Franklin 20: At Parkville, Timmena Wilkins led all scorers with 16, as the Millers (17-4) ran all over the the Indians, outscoring them 35-8 in the second half. Millford Mill, which made more free throws (seven) than Franklin made field goals (six), got big contributions from Qiana Cheatham, who scored 13 and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Candyce Jeter, who scored 12. The Millers, who have won three straight regional titles, will meet Randallstown in the final tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Parkville.
No. 14 Randallstown 76, Bel Air 37: At Parkville, Tiffany Cox led a balanced effort for the Rams, scoring 14 to help rout the Bobcats. Ravin Chase added 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Class 2A North
No. 11 Dunbar 79, City 51: The Poets earned a spot in the regional final behind the all-around play of Tiffany Jones, who scored 15, grabbed seven rebounds and totaled seven assits. Toni Kennedy also scored 15 and had four steals. Dunbar (20-4) will face Catonsville tomorrow in the final.
No. 13 Catonsville 68, Hereford 54: Dani Packer shook off flu symptoms to score 15 and grab 15 rebounds, leading the Comets past the Bulls. Catonsville was solid all-around, as Ashley Liggett led everyone with 19 points and Mura Lentz chipped in 16, including a big three-pointer in the fourth quarter that silenced a Hereford run.
Catonsville is making its fourth straight appearance in the regional finals.
Class 2A South
No. 4 Mount Hebron 74, Central 50: The Vikings trailed after one quarter, but used a 24-10 second-quarter burst to pull away from the Falcons. Erin Jaschik led the way for Mount Hebron with 22 points, and Kristen Waagbo added 18 and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Central's Tereasa Williams scored 16 in the losing effort.
Mount Hebron will play Fairmont Heights, a 64-57 winner over second-seeded Gwyn Park, at Mount Hebron tomorrow.
Class 2A West
Francis Scott Key 58, Linganore 45: A halftime defensive change, dominant rebounding by Adria Stonesifer and solid all-around play from all five starters sparked the Eagles' win.
Class 1A South
No. 7 Glenelg 59, No. 6 Oakland Mills 53: Glenelg's 21-point third-quarter lead was cut to three with 16 seconds left to play, but the Gladiators held on for the semifinal victory at Oakland Mills. The Gladiators (16-7), who were state champions two years ago and state finalists last season, will play host to Smithsburg, a 60-43 winner over Catoctin, at 7 p.m. tomorrow for the region championship.
Heather Young led Glenelg with 18 points, 13 in the first half.
