'Maple Syrup Weekend'

Helping out with the cooking was never so much fun. Visitors to the Oregon Ridge Nature Center this weekend will take part in the making of maple syrup, as part of "Maple Syrup Weekend." Visitors will hike with a naturalist to the sugar bush, tap trees, return to the center's Sugar House with a bucket of sap to add to the evaporator and watch it boil into maple syrup for sampling. Visitors can, as well, watch a slide presentation on the art of maple sugaring from Native American times to the present. Visitors can browse among exhibits and purchase maple syrup.

The maple syrup season at Oregon Ridge Park wraps up next weekend with its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Oregon Ridge Park Lodge.

Both March 3 and 4, visitors can sit down to hot pancakes with genuine maple syrup, sausage, orange juice, coffee, tea or milk and can again watch maple syrup being made in the Sugar House evaporator after the breakfast.

"Maple Syrup Weekend" runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville. Free. The pancake breakfast runs 9 a.m.-noon March 3 and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 4 at the Oregon Ridge Park Lodge, 13401 Beaver Dam Road. $4.50; $2.50 ages 2-8. Call 410-887-1815.
