For those of you who are planning a wedding reception -- whether for a small group or for hundreds of guests -- here's a list of some of the area's most popular reception venues. It will appear occasionally as space permits.

Morris Meadows Historic Preservation Museum, 1523 Freeland Road, Freeland, 410-329-6636. Spacious dining area surrounded by theme rooms displaying historic artifacts. Contact: Lorraine Mapp. Reserve as early as possible. Accommodates up to 200. Available year-round, all day weekdays, weekends after 5 p.m. Cost varies. Approved caterers only. Smoking indoors prohibited. Viewing by appointment only.

Mount Clare Stable, Carroll Park, Washington Boulevard and South Monroe Street, 410-837-3262. Spacious turn-of-the-century carriage house is part of Baltimore's oldest residence. Contact: Alan Gephardt or Krista Green. Reserve as early as possible. Accommodates 100 seated theater-style, 75 seated at tables, 150 standing. Available daily. Midnight curfew. Approved caterer only. Cost varies.

Nixon's Farm, Nixon's Farm Lane, West Friendship, 410-442-2151. Contact: Randy Nixon. Rustic farm accommodates 200 people seated. Room for dancing, dining. Available year-round. Cost ranges from $25 to $70 per person. In-house catering only.

Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, 410-730-4801. Late-Federalist mansion. Reserve as soon as possible. Accommodates 200 standing, 150 seated. Available 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays to Sundays. Cost varies. Outside caterers accepted with approval.

Oregon Ridge Park, 13401 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, 410-887-1818. Contact: Sandy Trimble. Choice of three sites. The main lodge's Sequoia Room seats 250 comfortably, has a fireplace and room for dancing, and is available September through mid-June. The white concert dome (used by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra during summer concerts) can seat up to 150. And for less formal gatherings, the two large pavilions can seat up to 200. Approved caterers list available. Reservations up to one year in advance. Call for costs and availability.

Overlea Caterers, 6809 Belair Road, 410-668-6060. Two banquet rooms are available for rental. Reserve as soon as possible. Accommodates 300 seated, 400 standing. Available daily. Cost varies. Customized packages available. In-house catering only.

Truffles at the Belvedere, 1 E. Chase St., 410-332-1000. The Belvedere, a former landmark hotel, was built in 1903. Reserve as early as possible. Available year-round. Accommodates 60 seated with dancing in the Palm Room; 220 seated with dancing, 300 standing in the Charles Room; 300 seated with dancing, 380 standing in the Grand Ballroom; 150 seated with dancing in the Platinum Room; 100 seated and 125 standing in the John Eager Howard Room. Up to 500 standing when using both the Grand and Platinum rooms. Cost: $49 per person and up. Truffles is exclusive caterer.

Wakefield Valley Golf Club, 1000 Fenby Farm Road, Westminster, 410-876-8787. Renovated Durbin House, built in 1700, and a ballroom in the country club are available for receptions. Contact: Louise A. Morvay. Reserve as soon as possible. Accommodates up to 225 seated with dancing in the ballroom, 40 seated in the Durbin House. Available daily. Cost varies. In-house catering only.

Westminster Hall, Fayette and Greene streets, 410-706-2072. Former church with a Gothic exterior. Edgar Allan Poe is buried on the grounds. Contact: Mary Jo Rodney at the University of Maryland. Reserve as early as possible. Accommodates 250. Available year-round. Catering by approved firms only. Call for costs.

Westminster Inn, 5 S. Center St., Westminster, 410-876-2893. Built as a schoolhouse in 1899. Contact: event planner. Reserve as soon as possible. Open year-round. Accommodates 225 seated, 300 standing. Exclusive caterer: Westminster Inn Caterers. Cost: approximately $25 per person and up.

American Visionary Art Museum, 800 Key Highway, 410-244-1900. The museum and the Joy America Cafe accommodate 25 to 600 people in fall and winter and 25 to 1,000 people in spring and summer. Contact: Juliana Trotta. Rental rates range from $200 for the library to $1,500 for the sculpture barn and garden to $3,500 for the main building, barn, plaza and seven galleries. Call for all rates. Catering available with Joy America Cafe. Outside caterers also accepted. No food or drinks in art galleries. Prices and dates apply to off-hours of AVAM. Security and other arrangements are extra costs.

Antrim 1844 Country Inn, 30 Trevanion Road, Taneytown, 410-876-0237. Nineteenth-century plantation. Contact: Linda Stevens or Dorothy Mollett. Reservations accepted up to 18 months in advance. Accommodates 225 seated, 350 standing. Available daily. Cost: Basic rental ranges from $250 for small parties to $2,200. Catering extra; in-house only. Guest rooms available.

Baltimore Rowing and Water Resource Center, 3301 Waterview Ave., 410-396-3838. Situated on the Patapsco River. Contact: Portia Harris. Reserve six months in advance. Accommodates 100 seated, 250 standing. Available evenings and Saturdays. Caterers must provide their own insurance. Cost: $800 for eight hours.

Belmont Manor House, 6555 Belmont Woods Road, Elkridge, 410-796-4300. Eighteenth-century manor house with formal garden. Contact: Ben Rooney. Reserve as soon as possible. Accommodates 50 seated indoors, 100 indoors for a cocktail reception, 250 for an outdoor garden reception. Available weekends year-round. Cost: $1,650-$5,500 for weekend rental, Fridays to Sundays. Includes use of the house, garden and overnight rooms. Other packages are available. In-house catering available for up to 100 guests. Licensed and approved caterers only. Dancing facilities available.

Biltmore Suites, 205 W. Madison St., 410-728-6550. Victorian mansion decorated with antiques. Accommodates up to 30 people. In-house and outside catering. Cost: $500.

Cloisters, 10440 Falls Road, 410-557-4494. Originally a private home modeled after French and English medieval castles. For a time the Children's Museum. The Cloisters is situated on a 60-acre wooded estate. Contact: Virginia Remsberg. Reserve as early as possible. Available daily. Accommodates 150 seated, 200 standing. Cost: $800 Mondays to Thursdays, $1,500 Fridays, Sundays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. $1,800 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays. Licensed caterers only. No smoking. Free parking.
