Waverly woman, 22, killed in fire at her home; six others escape injury

A 22-year-old Waverly woman was killed in a one-alarm fire last night at her home in the 3600 block of Old York Road in North Baltimore, according to city fire officials.

Six other people escaped the blaze without injury, said Inspector Michael Maybin, a fire department spokesman at the scene.

The victim was identified last night by a relative as Vanceshia Lucas. She was found in the basement of the two-story, brick rowhouse and declared dead at the scence. Some of the people who escaped had tried to save her, Maybin said.

Firefighters were called to the house at 9:46 p.m., Maybin said, and the blaze was brought under control at about 10:20 p.m.

" We don't think there's anything suspicious here," Maybin said. Its too early to speculate as to cause and origin. The fire is under investigation, he said.

A cousin of the victim, Arnetta Hamiltion, said that Lucas was unemployed but hoped to take classes in nursing.
