Construction accident forces 5-hour closing of Hanover Pike

Route 30 between Hampstead and Manchester was closed for five hours yesterday after a private contractor installing sewer pipes struck utility lines, authorities said.

The highway, also known as Hanover Pike, was closed at Maple Grove Road on the north and at Basler Road on the south. Traffic was detoured around the scene between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., police said.

The incident began when a piece of construction equipment struck electric and telephone lines, snapping off one utility pole and damaging another outside the home of Arbadella Graff in the 200 block of Hanover Pike, the homeowner said.

Graff said workers warned her of the fallen "hot" wires and alerted state highway and utility workers to have repairs made.
