Court documents revealed yesterday that Howard County police think two of the men charged in the Waverly Winds Apartment shooting in Columbia on Sept. 6 distracted the three victims while the gunman fired several shots at them.
Christopher Lee Cowan, 18, of Randallstown, who is accused of being the shooter; his brother, Brandon Cowan, 16, also of Randallstown, who is being charged as an adult; and Derris Moore of Catonsville are charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bond in the death of Walter Scott Cook, 20, of Owings Mills. Cook was shot in the head and died Sept. 9 at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Two of the victims managed to escape. Damany Hughes of Baltimore was treated for a graze wound to the head, and Michael Cunningham, address unknown, was not injured and escaped on foot.
According to court documents, Detective Keith Fisher interviewed eyewitnesses who said that Brandon Cowan and Moore "circled to the side of the victims to draw their attention from the shooter."
