Decision on mosque will not be reconsidered
FREDERICK - Despite a petition by local Muslims, the county commissioners have decided to stand by their decision to deny water and sewer service needed for a proposed mosque on farmland.
Muslim leaders had asked that the case be re-evaluated based on a new federal law that requires fair treatment of religious groups in land-use decisions. However, the commissioners affirmed their 3-2 vote last month to deny the hookup needed for what would be the county's first mosque.
GOP criticizes naming of Bromwell to head IWIF
ANNAPOLIS - Maryland's Republican Party denounced the hiring of Sen. Thomas L. Bromwell as head of the state's Injured Workers' Insurance Fund yesterday, calling it an example of the "good-old-boy mentality."
Bromwell, a Baltimore County Democrat, announced this week that he would resign his seat Dec. 1 to take the $150,000-a-year post.
Paul Ellington, executive director of the state GOP, said this was an example of an official using his position to line up a lucrative job. Bromwell declined to comment.
