Greyhounds learning to pass foes on road

Mark Mettrick, whose men's soccer teams were distinguished by scrappy play at Mount St. Mary's, has Loyola's team on the right track in his first season in Evergreen.

The Greyhounds have beaten two nationally ranked teams on enemy turf within the past week. Miguel Abreu beat then-No. 19 UMBC with a goal in double overtime Saturday, then repeated the feat Tuesday night against No. 16 Fairfield, defending champion in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Mettrick will take his team to Wisconsin-Green Bay before it faces nationally ranked Maryland on Wednesday.

UMBC's streaks

Loyola's defeat of UMBC in men's soccer last week ended two streaks. UMBC had won 23 regular-season games in a row, and 16 straight home games.

The loss also continued an 18-game winless streak vs. Loyola.

Several local teams ranked

Where to begin? The Maryland women's field hockey team is ranked No. 1 with four straight wins to start the season. The school's men's and women's soccer teams are also in the Top 25, both ranked 23rd.

Both of Johns Hopkins' soccer teams are ranked in Division III, the men at No. 12 and the women at No. 20. Salisbury State's field hockey team is ranked No. 14 in Division III.

Regionally, UMBC (sixth), Loyola (sixth) and Navy (10th) are regarded among the best men's soccer teams in the South Atlantic region this week.

In Division III men's soccer, Western Maryland is No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic, while Salisbury State is No. 4 in the South. Salisbury State's women's team is ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic.

Loyola, Towson square off

Two of the best teams in women's soccer play today when Towson (3-2) faces Loyola (2-3) at 4 p.m. The Tigers won their first three games before falling to ninth-ranked Maryland and unranked American.

The Greyhounds are expected to win the MAAC.

UMES cross country meet

The men's and women's cross country teams at UMES will play host to the Cappy Anderson Invitational this weekend in Princess Anne. Hawks runner Marta Sterbova finished second (behind Loyola's Danielle Walther) in the Towson Invitational last weekend.

Loyola rower earns honor

Loyola's Brianne Higgins was named to the US Rowing Collegiate Honor Roll First Team. Higgins, with a 3.904 grade-point average in speech pathology, performed on the varsity boat that placed first in the MAAC championships.

Olympic wave-off

Nickie Peters, the Coppin State runner set to represent St. Vincent in the Sydney Olympics, decided not to go because his country's team was planning an extended stay in Australia that would have eliminated most of his semester. In the men's race at the Towson Invitational last weekend, Peters finished second to Anne Arundel College's Victor Thillet.

Dean in line for honor

Salisbury State's Gina Dean, a Division III All-American in field hockey, is the NCAA Woman of the Year for Maryland. A four-year letter winner at Salisbury, she is eligible for the NCAA's national award, to be announced next month.

Hopkins adds five to Hall

Johns Hopkins will induct two three-time lacrosse All-Americans -- current men's coach Dave Pietramala and Alice Collins Margraff -- into its Hall of Fame on Sept. 23. Baseball standout Andy Bernstein, three-sport star Church Yearley and NCAA champion swimmer Mike Leonhardt are the others.
