Man, 21, arrested on drug charges

A Baltimore County man was held in lieu of $50,000 bond yesterday after he was arrested on charges of selling drugs to undercover troopers during a crackdown on open-air sales in Westminster in summer 1999, court records show.

Dante J. Smith, 21, of the 4700 block of Duncannon Road in Pikesville was charged with counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and related charges, according to court records.

A man sold undercover troopers two $20 bags of suspected crack during Operation Sullivan on June 16, 1999, charging documents show. The same man directed the officers to make a $60 purchase of crack cocaine from an unidentified man six days later, and they did.

The purchases were made in an apartment building stairwell on Sullivan Avenue, investigators said.

After nearly a year of investigation, troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Smith on June 12, court records show.

Whether a second man was identified, arrested and charged was not available yesterday.
