Touchdown for United Way
It's one thing to be sitting and eating, watching your favorite Ravens' football players on TV at home. It's quite another to be sitting and eating with your favorite Ravens' players in the Baltimore Convention Center. But that's what some 800 local football fans got to do at the United Way of Central Maryland's 2000 Community Campaign Kickoff Lunch.
As head coach Brian Billick introduced the team's coaches and players, each was escorted by a cheerleader to a table to share lunch with his fans. Rather than knife or fork, however, the utensil of choice at this get-together was the pen - since many of the football buffs seemed to crave autographs more than their grilled chicken.
Among those in this scrimmage: Larry Walton, United Way of Central Maryland president and chief professional officer; Jim Sellinger, United Way of Central Maryland board chair; Mike Waller, 2000 Campaign chair; Jim Brinkley and Ed Miller, board members; Art Modell, Baltimore Ravens owner and president; Ozzie Newsome, Cleveland Browns' Hall of Famer; Harry Stout, Fidelity and Guaranty Life president; George Heidelmaier, Accupay, Inc. vice president; David Turner, WLIF FM account executive; Julie Mercer, Columbia Consulting Group executive recruiter; Carey Boyd, Legg Mason project coordinator; and George Kirkley, IBM program manager.
The event raised $25,000 for the United Way.
Museum expansion celebrated
The roof of the Maryland Science Center didn't need much decoration for the party being held there. The view of a shimmering Inner Harbor provided a perfect backdrop for the celebration welcoming Howard County's African Art Museum of Maryland in its planned expansion to a Baltimore location - in the Blaustein Building at 1 North Charles St. - next year.
Warmhearted guests and cool evening breezes circulated around the terrace, as the J-Groove Band added tones of mellow jazz and blues to the atmosphere.
Among the 150 folks in attendance: party host Weller Thomas, CEO of Pathfinders Travel, Inc.; Doris Ligon, founder and director of the African Art Museum of Maryland; Claude Ligon, museum development director; Maurice Simpkins, museum board chair; Dr. Michael Keleman, museum board member; Alexander Wallace, trade and economic counselor for the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia; Ed Kiely, program officer for Africa International Foundation for Election Systems; Melvina Brown, realtor of Re/Max Columbia; Connie Yingling, Maryland Office of Tourism public relations coordinator; Sherri Robinson, Lockheed Martin human resources specialist; Afua Smith, Giant Food market research analyst; and Sean Gibson, owner of Model Citizen Modeling Studio.
