Community colleges forming consortium on health care classes

Howard, Carroll and Frederick community colleges have announced the formation of the Mid-Maryland Allied Healthcare Education Consortium.

The consortium will allow residents of all three counties to enroll in selected health care programs at any of the colleges at in-county tuition rates.

Programs being considered include physical therapy assistant and veterinary technician at Carroll; bio-laboratory science tech, paramedic technician, registered nurse, respiratory therapy and surgical technology at Frederick; biomedical engineering technology, cardiovascular technology, emergency medical technician and registered technician at Howard.

School offering screening for gifted student program

Burleigh Manor Middle School is in the process of screening students who are new to Howard County for inclusion in the Gifted & Talented Program.

If you have a child new to Howard County Schools in grades 6 to 8 whom you wish to nominate for screening, call the school or e-mail your request to dlee@mail.howard

All requests to test students new to Howard County must be submitted no later than Sept. 20.

Superintendent O'Rourke to meet with PTA boards

Howard County Superintendent of Schools John R. O'Rourke has scheduled six meetings with local Parent Teacher Association executive boards.

The sessions will be taped by cable Channel 72 and broadcast during the days after each session. The comments from parents will be transcribed and posted on the school system's Web site:

O'Rourke will discuss western elementary schools from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight at Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School, 13400 Triadelphia Road, Ellicott City; all high schools from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 13 at Centennial High School, 4300 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City; all middle schools from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at Wilde Lake Middle School, 10481 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia; central Columbia elementary schools from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at Bryant Woods Elementary School, 5450 Blue Heron Lane; and southeast elementary schools from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at Guilford Elementary School, 7335 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

Eligibility rules revised for school meal program

The public school system has announced revised income eligibility guidelines for free and reduced-price school meals and milk.
