Elkton boy, 10, dies after truck strikes him

A 10-year-old Elkton boy died Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck while running across Crain Highway in Glen Burnie, apparently trying to avoid the owner of a car that he and two cousins had allegedly taken without permission.

The boy, whose name was not released by police pending notification of his parents, ran across southbound Crain Highway about 10:14 p.m., leaped over the median guardrail and ran into the northbound lane of the highway where he was struck by a pickup truck and thrown 60 feet, police said.

"He just dashed right out," said Cpl. Charles S. Brown of the Anne Arundel County police. "He ran into the fast lane."

The boy was taken to North Arundel Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11 p.m., police said.

Police said the boy was following two of his cousins, a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, across the highway.

According to police, the victim and his cousins had taken the car of the older boy's grandmother without permission earlier Saturday and were later reported missing in Prince George's County.

The three traveled to Glen Burnie to visit the older boy's girlfriend, who lives in the Greentree Apartments on Winding Wood Road, police said.

They parked the grandmother's car on the other side of Crain Highway in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

When the three youths returned to the parking lot, they found the grandmother waiting for them, police said.

The grandmother knew where the girlfriend lived and thought her grandson would probably go there, Brown said.

The youths ran from the grandmother toward the apartments, running across the highway where the boy was struck by the truck, police said.

The older boy was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of fire personnel for getting in the way of firefighters' efforts to treat the victim, police said.

He is being held at the Department of Juvenile Services in Anne Arundel County.
