Western's win streak stopped

Running back Vince Turner threw for 87 yards and two touchdowns as Bridgewater College stunned host Western Maryland, 19-7, at Scott S. Bair Stadium yesterday.

The loss marks the first regular-season defeat in 31 games for the Green Terror (0-1), which strung together three perfect regular seasons in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Western Maryland took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter when Aaron Hutsell rushed in from 9 yards out, but the Eagles' Marcus Richardson made a 27-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter to put Bridgewater ahead. Craig Lewis added an 11-yard touchdown run with 2:15 left to seal the win.

Newport News 20, Salisbury State 18: Visiting Salisbury State trailed 20-12 in the closing minute of play and marched 70 yards in 53 seconds, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Driskell to Josh Stark. Driskell's two-point conversion pass to Ray D'Ambrosio was deflected by the Builders' Adam Elam as the Sea Gulls lost on Apprentice Field in Newport News, Va.

Driskell completed eight of 18 passes for 149 yards.

J.C. Smith 26, Bowie State 21: Andrew Momon caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and recovered a fumble to power the Golden Bulls (1-0) past the Bulldogs (0-1) in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action.
