Anita Strohmer, a longtime church volunteer, died Tuesday of heart failure at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. She was 85.
Born Anita Weidey in Baltimore, she graduated in 1934 from Western High School and attended Strayer Business College in Baltimore after graduation, where she studied for about a year.
In 1936, she married Arthur F. Strohmer. Mr. Strohmer died in 1976.
Mrs. Strohmer was a 60-year member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Catonsville, where she taught Sunday school for many years and also served several years as treasurer of the church's "Book Nook Society" reading club.
"She was the kind of person that was involved in so many things; she was in church every Sunday," said Ermin Doyle of Catonsville, a longtime Sunday school student of Mrs. Strohmer's. "She had boundless energy and a friendly personality. ... She was always trying to help other people."
About 1950, Mrs. Strohmer began work as office manager at Augsburg Lutheran Home in Baltimore, where she worked for more than 15 years.
She then began work as a teller at Western Permanent Savings and Loan in Catonsville. She remained there for 14 years.
After leaving Western Permanent, Mrs. Strohmer began work as secretary at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Millersville.
She remained there about 14 years until her retirement at age 84.
Mrs. Strohmer was an avid square dancer for many years and founded a square dancing and line dancing organization at Charlestown about 1984, soon after she moved there.
"She was an extremely active woman, a very vibrant individual," said her son, Arthur F. Strohmer of Sayerville, N.J.
During her time at Charlestown, Mrs. Strohmer remained active, serving as a member of the Resident's Council for more than 10 years.
She also performed in many of the community's plays and musicals and served as photographer at many of its events.
Mr. Strohmer said his mother was extremely outgoing. "She probably knew half of Baltimore," he said.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 929 Ingleside Ave., Catonsville.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Strohmer is survived by a daughter, Carol A. Zahnow of Middleton, Wis.; and two granddaughters.
